My '14 A22 had a big set back this weekend...ImageImageImage
Happened on the first run of the evening. Water was 20ft deep. I didn't have any scratches/damage on the hull, prop, or ski platform so I don't think I hit anything. Wedge was down and didn't sustain any damage either. Was using the same ballast I always use (750s in rear, 500 arrow in front, stock ballast full, and additional 750 on port rear seats) and had 4 adults total. Anyone ever see or hear of this before? Would be great if I just had to replace the surf panel and not the hydraulic pump. Anyone know what replacement gates run from axis/Malibu? I have an extended warranty through FPC with a wakeboard boat rider (supposedly covers tower and other accessories) so perhaps I won't be bent over too hard.

Thanks for your input.

Did you drive over 13/14mph?

I believe they retract at 14 or 15mph to prevent damage

That is very odd break point. Contact Malibu/Axis and let them see it.

would insurance cover that? I was talking with someone last week and he told me anything under the boat is covered by insurance.

I've never placed an insurance claim on any of my promo boats in the past. I did have some team riders destroy a prop once and I just replaced it not thinking I should have insurance process a claim.

We all know that it should not have happened. The design and normal construction of the surfgate is sufficient to handle the stresses of use. Therefore, the cause of the failure can be considered a "Latent Defect". Most boat policies cover LATENT DEFECTS!

By sticking to my guns I got my insurance to pay almost $15K for a new fuel tank on my SeaRay (ocean boat) when it had a rub in a corner that exposed it to corrosion damage, filled the bilge with gas and left me 12 miles off shore in a boat filled with gas waiting for help. The cause of the failure was corrosion - not covered. But the cause of the corrosion was a latent defect that allowed the tank to move such that it got rubbed (incorrectly installed rubber strip). SeaRay was glad to say that their design was not bad and normally their boats do not fail.

Because I used the latent defect clause it was paid for.

The glass wrapped foam panel must have had a latent defect to allow the failure.

My dealer talked to Malibu and they are going to send out a new gate. Only bummer is that they said it will take a couple of weeks because it's a "custom" order. Figured Malibu would have a good stack of these manufactured already...
Glad I'm not paying anything out of pocket at least

I imagine they are like every boat manufacturer and build glass parts on an as ordered basis.

With all of the colors, etc over the years it wouldn't make any business sense at all to keep a stack of them that might not ever sell.

I am sure they have the gates laying around.. The custom is just them getting the color on it..
